In Ethiopia, the doctor, health officer, nurse and midwife to population ratio is 0.7 per 1000 population, far behind the minimum threshold of 2.3 doctor, nurse and midwife to 1000 population ratio required to ensure high coverage with essential health interventions. Health worker density ranges from 0.24 per 1,000 populations in rural areas to 2.7 per 1,000 populations in urban areas.

Program goal

The program aimed to equip nurses with a complex mix of knowledge, skills and attitudes and preparing competent graduate nurses to their professional roles expected in the broader society.

Program Objectives

Upon completion of these courses for generic B.Sc. nursing program, the graduates are expected to:

  1. Provide high quality comprehensive nursing care in ethical and professional manner at individuals, family and community levels at all level of health care settings following sound scientific ways of nursing processes.
  2. Manage common MCH, RH, emergency and mental health problems
  3. Demonstrate competence in the skills and techniques of nursing based on concepts and principles from selected areas of physical, biological and behavioral sciences.
  4. Participate as members of health team in the promotive, preventive, curative and rehabilitative health care delivery system of the country.
  5. Demonstrate leadership qualities and decision-making abilities in various situations.
  6. Recognize the need for continued learning for their personal relations and professional development.
  7. Demonstrate skills in teaching, management, inter-personal relations and communication.
  8. Practice ethical values in their personal and professional life.
  9. Lead and manage nursing care services
  10. Engage in nursing education, research and advocacy that will improve and enhance nursing profession and services
