Rift Valley University Community Service & Technology Transfer Directorate has organized a one-day training on April 17, 2024, at RVU Head Office. The objective of the training was to encourage RVU Engineering and Technology campuses to prepare themselves for the coming RVU Annual Exhibition.
Department heads and instructors from RVU campuses that offer engineering and technology were invited to attend. Ato Bogale Mosisa, Director for Community Service and Technology Transfer, informed the participants what has been done by the selected campuses in areas of innovation, explained the rationale for organizing such events, and invited Prof. Derbsa Dufera, Vice President for Research, Community Service, and Technology Transfer, to give instructions and directives for the participants. Professor Derbsa, in his brief presentation, raised the confusion between charity work and community service and informed the participants how such a misconception affected RVU community service undertakings.
To overcome such confusion, Prof. attempted to define community service as community engagement that involves translating the acquired knowledge and innovation to reach out to the community through continuous engagements.
He specifically stated that community engagement is among the core functions of RVU and urged participants to tailor their future tasks in line with this spirit. Prof. also informed the participants to think about focusing on income-generating activities and suggested the establishment of a technology hub where new ideas and innovations are accumulated and translated into actions.
The staff members and professionals took much time, deliberated on materializing the intended goal, and agreed to establish a coordinating committee for this purpose. Finally, they reach a consensus to simultaneously work hard to materialize community engagement and income-generating activities.
